SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES

Gretchen Whitmer
for Governor

Gretchen Whitmer’s nearly 100% environmental voting record makes her a great choice for governor of the Great Lakes State.

Gretchen Whitmer will make Michigan's people and our natural heritage a priority.

She brings to Lansing something we have not had for eight years: strong, decisive leadership with a proven track record on public health, Michigan’s environment and social change.

Michigan desperately needs Gretchen Whitmer’s voice, values, and experience. Her public health and environmental record were among the best in the Michigan Legislature. Gretchen Whitmer helped establish the state’s first renewable and efficiency standards to promote clean energy.

Cleaning Up Our Drinking Water

Gretchen Whitmer’s infrastructure plan will prioritize replacing lead service lines throughout the state to keep Michigan’s families safe.  Her Rebuild Michigan Bank will finance drinking line upgrades, sewer and drain maintenance and dam removals, and provide $812 million in additional water infrastructure funding through 2038.

Leading on Climate Change

Michigan can become a world leader on clean energy and create thousands of good-paying jobs in the process.  Gretchen Whitmer wants to join hundreds of mayors and a dozen governors across the nation in committing to lowering carbon emissions.

Fighting Environmental Injustice and Water Shutoffs

Gretchen Whitmer fought against the emergency manager law that led to the poisoning of Flint.  She believes no Michigander should go without water service because of a delinquent water bill and supports new rate structures and billing and collection options.

MISSING IN ACTION ON WATER CONTAMINATION

From Grayling to Ann Arbor to Oscoda, more and more Michigan residents are discovering their families have been living near sites contaminated with PFAS, which has been linked to serious health problems, including cancer. But even as 31 contaminated sites have been identified in Michigan so far, Bill Schuette doesn’t even mention the environment, our water and public health as an issue on his campaign web site.

FAILED TO RESPOND TO FLINT RESIDENTS

A year before Bill Schuette began investigating Flint’s drinking water quality, his office failed to respond to 15 complaints from Flint residents about the city’s unsafe water.

SIDES WITH POLLUTERS

Using taxpayer money, Bill Schuette sided with polluters and supported a lawsuit to block measures that protect families from dangerous mercury and other harmful emissions at dirty coal plants even though we know they are linked to serious health threats, including cancer.

SUPPORTS OIL PIPELINES IN THE GREAT LAKES

After proclaiming Enbridge Line 5’s oil pipeline’s days are numbered, Bill Schuette is now embracing an Enbridge-backed proposal that will keep oil flowing through the Mackinac Straits. Bill Schuette co-chaired a task force that failed to call for shutting down the dangerous 65-year-old pipelines, which the state’s own studies show could cause nearly $2 billion in damages to our economy, coastline, beaches and drinking water systems.
